“[Prescribed burns] are a safe and effective meadow management tool as we seek to be good stewards of our natural resources at Milton Hershey School,” said Nate McKelvie, an instructional advisor at the MHS Environmental Center.
Controlled burns help rejuvenate meadow vegetation, creating a healthier and more diverse ecosystem for wildlife and plant life. The controlled burns at MHS were conducted by DCNR’s professional wildland fire crew in conjunction with the Safety and Security and Agricultural and Environmental Education (AEE) staff at MHS. The crew followed a prescribed burn plan that was designed and approved by DCNR and MHS.
Milton Hershey School’s AEE Department educates students and staff about protecting the environment and provides exposure to environmental and agricultural concepts through experiential learning opportunities. Learn more about our commitment to the environment.
